If at least one person is employed, either the Health and Safety Law Poster (What You Need to Know) should be displayed or each member of staff should be provided with a copy of the equivalent pocket card.
The poster should be displayed in a prominent position where workers can easily read it i.e. staff room, canteen or entrance to the premises.
The poster outlines health and safety laws and includes a straightforward list that informs employees and visitors of their duties.
Details of any employee safety representatives or health and safety contacts could be added where appropriate onto the poster.
NB A new simplified version of the health and safety law poster was published in 2009 (Red and white copy). A copy of the 1999 version (Brown) should be removed and replaced by the updated version.
A policy statement describes how you will manage health and safety in your business and inform staff and others about your commitment to health and safety, this forms your policy by clearly stating who does what, when and how. This needs to be written down and ideally displayed if you employ five or more people.
The policy should not be complicated or time-consuming, but we have developed a template that you can download and complete, alternatively we can develop a bespoke policy to suit your business needs.
The Safety Law Poster and Policy Statement demonstrates your commitment to health and safety and they will only be effective if you and your staff follow and refer to them regularly.
