Following the recent publication of annual statistics by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) – which highlighted an increase in work-related stress cases, HSE has launched a new online tool as part of its Working Minds campaign.
The tool is a free and interactive online service, designed to help employers learn more about mental health issues and follow their statutory health and safety obligations. Businesses are strongly advised to sign up for free. The aim of the campaign is to promote mental health awareness in the workplace and help employers identify the tell-tale factors. As the Regulator said “…it needs to be the norm to talk about stress.”
How does this Impact Employers?
The law states that all employers owe a duty to carry out a stress risk assessment, and to act upon them to remove or lower the risks of work-related stress and support good mental health practices in the workplace. The campaign aims to:
- Recognise the signs and causes of workplace stress.
- Encourage employers to proactively respond to identified risks.
- Promote open and honest conversation in the workplace.
- Reflect on actions agreed and taken.
- Establish a routine for businesses to follow.
According to the HSE, the total annual cost of stress-related absences has increased 25% since 2019, costing the economy up to £56 billion a year. Given the costs – as well as the impact it has on human lifestyle, it is important this message is taken seriously. The online tool can be accessed by following the link below.

Although this is a useful tool, it should be treated as a guide only. It does not replace the need to get professional advice when faced with work-related stress in the workplace. Employers are advised to call our HR Helpline Team for free on 0116 274 9193.
